Galway to Connemara
Connemara is the mountainous, lake-scattered region west of Galway city. It is one of the most common day trips from Galway, by car or on a guided tour.

Where Connemara is and what a day covers
Connemara stretches west and north-west of Galway city, bounded by Galway Bay to the south, the Atlantic to the west and Killary Harbour to the north. The landscape is bog, lakes and the quartzite peaks of the Twelve Bens, with Irish-speaking (Gaeltacht) areas along the coast.
Most day trips follow the N59 inland through Oughterard, Maam Cross and Recess towards Clifden, returning by a coastal or lakeside route. A full loop from Galway city is a long day of driving with several stops.

- Kylemore Abbey — a lakeside country house, now a Benedictine abbey, with a Victorian walled garden and neo-Gothic church.
- Connemara National Park — walking trails at Letterfrack, including the climb up Diamond Hill.
- Killary Harbour — a long, narrow sea inlet on the Galway–Mayo border.
- Clifden and the Sky Road — the region's main town and a short headland loop with Atlantic views.
- Lough Corrib and Oughterard — a large lake on the eastern edge, often the first stop out of Galway.
- Coastal Gaeltacht villages — Spiddal, Rossaveel and the bays along the R336.

Connemara or the Aran Islands from Galway?
Both are day trips from Galway city and both are hard to fit into the same day. The Aran Islands need a ferry or flight and a fixed return crossing — see Aran Islands from Galway. Connemara is a road day with more flexibility. Note that Rossaveel, the main year-round ferry port, sits inside Connemara, so the two areas overlap geographically — see Aran Islands from Rossaveel.

What to check before booking
- Whether Kylemore Abbey admission is included or paid separately.
- How long the coach stops at the abbey, the national park and Killary.
- Pickup point in Galway city and the return time.
- Whether the route is the inland N59, the coast road, or a loop of both.
- Waterproofs and walking shoes — the weather changes quickly in the hills.
